What is an EMI?
EMI stands for Equated Monthly Instalment. It is the fixed amount generally paid by a borrower to the lender every month towards repayment of a loan.
Each EMI normally consists of two components:
| Component | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Principal | The actual amount borrowed from the lender |
| Interest | The interest charged by the lender on the outstanding loan amount |
In the initial stage of many loans, a larger portion of the EMI goes towards interest. As the loan progresses, the principal component generally increases and the interest component decreases.
How Does the Free EMI Calculator Work?
The Free EMI Calculator uses the standard EMI formula to estimate your monthly repayment:
EMI = P × R × (1 + R)ⁿ / [(1 + R)ⁿ – 1]
Where:
P = Principal loan amount
R = Monthly interest rate
N = Total number of monthly instalments
You do not need to perform this calculation manually. Simply enter the required loan details into the calculator and the estimated EMI and repayment details will be displayed instantly.
What Can You Calculate?
Our online EMI Calculator can help you estimate:
| Calculation | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Monthly EMI | Estimate your monthly loan repayment |
| Principal Amount | Understand the amount borrowed |
| Interest Payable | Estimate total interest over the loan tenure |
| Total Repayment | Principal + estimated interest |
| Loan Tenure | Compare shorter and longer repayment periods |
Example of EMI Calculation
Suppose you plan to borrow ₹5,00,000 at an annual interest rate of 10% for 5 years.
| Loan Details | Example |
|---|---|
| Loan Amount | ₹5,00,000 |
| Interest Rate | 10% p.a. |
| Tenure | 5 Years |
| Estimated Monthly EMI | Approx. ₹10,625 |
| Estimated Total Payment | Approx. ₹6.37 Lakh |
| Estimated Interest | Approx. ₹1.37 Lakh |
The above figures are illustrative. Actual EMI may vary depending on the lender’s interest rate, loan terms, fees and applicable calculation methodology.

The actual interest rate, processing fees, prepayment charges, taxes and other applicable costs depend on the lender and the specific loan agreement.
How to Reduce Your Loan EMI?
Your EMI primarily depends on the loan amount, interest rate and tenure. A lower interest rate can reduce the interest burden, while extending the tenure may reduce the monthly EMI but can increase the total interest paid over the complete loan period.
Before selecting a loan, compare the total repayment amount rather than looking only at the monthly EMI. A lower EMI is not necessarily a cheaper loan if it comes with a significantly longer repayment period.
