What is Income Tax?
Income Tax is a direct tax imposed by the Government of India on the income earned by individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), firms, LLPs, companies, and other eligible taxpayers. The tax collected by the government is used for the development of public infrastructure, healthcare, education, defence, transportation, social welfare schemes, and other public services.
The Income-tax system in India follows a progressive taxation model, which means that taxpayers with higher taxable income generally pay tax at higher rates. Every taxpayer is required to calculate taxable income, pay applicable taxes, and file the Income Tax Return (ITR) within the prescribed due date under the Income-tax Act.
